Flemish Translation Services

Hugo Claus wrote The Sorrow of Belgium, one of the most important novels in the Dutch language, in the Flemish variety spoken across northern Belgium. Flemish is Dutch, but Belgian Dutch differs from Netherlands Dutch in vocabulary and register. A Netherlands Dutch translation does not serve a Belgian audience.

Brightlines provides Flemish translation services for clients across the UK and internationally. As a UK translation agency, Brightlines works with UK and international businesses entering or operating in the Belgian market, brands and consumer businesses targeting Flemish audiences, legal and compliance teams with Belgian-jurisdiction content, businesses with Belgian partners or supply chain relationships, publishers producing content for the Flemish market and organisations with Flemish-speaking audiences. Brightlines matches every Flemish project to a translator native to Belgian Dutch and with confirmed sector experience.

Flemish at a glance

  • Script: Latin alphabet, identical to Netherlands Dutch. The written form uses the standard Dutch alphabet with no additional characters. Diacritics (ë, ï, ü) appear occasionally to mark syllable boundaries in words like geïnteresseerd (interested).
  • Speakers: Approximately 6.5 million native Flemish speakers, primarily in the Flanders region of Belgium (northern Belgium) and Brussels. Smaller Flemish-speaking communities exist in French Flanders (northern France) and in Belgian diaspora communities globally. Standard Dutch is the official language of both the Netherlands and Belgium's Flemish community.
  • Grammar and structure: Flemish and Netherlands Dutch share the same standard written grammar, taught from the same rulebook (published by the Dutch Language Union / Nederlandse Taalunie). Both use two grammatical genders (common and neuter), verb-second word order in main clauses and complex verb positioning in subordinate clauses. Differences from Netherlands Dutch appear mainly in vocabulary and register rather than in grammar.
  • Translation risk: The most consistent commissioning error for Flemish is treating it as identical to Netherlands Dutch. Belgian Dutch uses different vocabulary in everyday and institutional contexts (gsm for mobile phone in Belgium, mobiel in the Netherlands; friet for chips in Belgium, patat in the Netherlands), tends towards more formal register with wider use of "u" where Netherlands Dutch uses "je", and follows Belgian institutional terminology for government, legal and medical content. Content produced in Netherlands Dutch for a Belgian audience reads as foreign, and Belgian audiences are attuned to the distinction.
  • AI suitability: AI training data for Dutch is mostly Netherlands Dutch, and AI output for Flemish frequently defaults to Netherlands Dutch vocabulary and register even when Belgian variants are requested. Human review by a Belgian Dutch translator is required on every project.

How clients use our Flemish translation services

  • Consumer, brand and marketing content: brand copy, product content, marketing campaigns and consumer communications for UK and international businesses targeting Flemish audiences in Belgium. Creative Translation is essential because Flemish consumer content responds to register, cultural reference and everyday vocabulary calibrated to Belgian audiences. Content produced in Netherlands Dutch reads as coming from another market.
  • Legal, business and regulatory content: contracts, regulatory submissions, compliance documentation and business correspondence for UK businesses with Belgian operations, legal firms handling Belgian-jurisdiction matters and organisations working with Belgian institutions. Specialist Led Translation is required because Belgian legal and regulatory terminology follows Belgian institutional conventions distinct from Netherlands equivalents.
  • Publishing, education and public-sector content: publishing content, education materials, government communications and public-sector content for organisations producing content for the Flemish market or Belgian public sector. Specialist Led Translation for structured educational and public-sector content; Creative Translation for consumer-facing publishing content.

What you get with Brightlines

Flemish translators native to Belgian Dutch, matched to sector

For you: translators native to Belgian Dutch and matched to the content type, not Netherlands Dutch translators handling Flemish as a variant.

Brightlines works with Flemish translators who are native speakers of Belgian Dutch and hold professional experience in the relevant content sector. A marketing translator brings command of Flemish consumer register and the cultural reference Belgian audiences respond to. A legal or business translator brings familiarity with Belgian institutional terminology and jurisdictional conventions.

Human-led review of Flemish vocabulary, register and Belgian-Netherlands distinction

For you: Belgian Dutch vocabulary, register conventions and institutional terminology checked in review, not after publication.

All Flemish translation work at Brightlines goes through a human review stage that checks Belgian Dutch vocabulary against Netherlands Dutch defaults, register appropriateness (particularly the formal-informal balance Flemish uses), institutional terminology and cultural references against the project brief. The review confirms that the content reads as Flemish rather than as Netherlands Dutch with Belgian spelling.
