Brightlines Translates Five Films For Freedom 2025
Brightlines provides creative translation for the British Council’s online LGBTQIA+ short film festival 2025.
We are very proud to announce that we have collaborated with the British Council again this year to bring the Five Films for Freedom to global audiences by subtitling this year’s lineup in 22 languages. If you would like to watch the films for free from the comfort of your own home, they will be available online for 12 days from the 19th to the 30th of March.
The Five Films for Freedom is run in collaboration with BFI Flare and is the world’s widest-reaching online LGBTQIA+ short film festival. Every year just 5 short films are chosen for the festival programme from filmmakers across the world. This year’s selection includes films from the UK, Indonesia, New Zealand, the USA and China.
This year’s line-up includes a beautiful stop-motion animation called Dragfox which features a very charismatic, singing fox voiced by none other than Sir Ian McKellen. The selection also includes a short documentary about TRUK United which has both trans and non-binary football teams, is open to people of all genders and aims to make football a more inclusive sport.
We have provided subtitling services for the British Council for the Five Films for Freedom festival every year since 2018. Our amazing team translate the subtitles creatively but also with accuracy, cultural sensitivity and a deep respect for the stories being told, and we believe this is why we are asked to take care of these translations year after year. Ensuring that audiences worldwide can fully engage with these films is a responsibility we take seriously, but it’s also a privilege. Every year, we look forward to seeing the powerful stories selected and playing our part in bringing them to a global audience.
